Canvas Course Roles

Kent State’s instance of Canvas has 8 course roles, each with increasing levels of permission that affect their ability to interact with Canvas courses.  They are listed below in ascending order with all abilities of the preceding role unless otherwise noted

  • Observer
    • Read-only access to the course content, including announcements.
    • Can view assignment and quiz descriptions but cannot submit work or receive grades.
    • Read-only access to discussion board. 
    • Can be linked to a student to view their progress in a course.
    • Cannot send messages to others in class (except Teacher, TA, fellow group members).
  • Blue-View
    • Same as Observer.
  • Guest Speaker
    • Cannot view announcements.
    • Can access and interact with course content including submitting assignments and quizzes.
    • Can read and reply to existing discussion board posts.
    • Can view own grades only.
    • Cannot send messages to others in class (except Teacher, TA, fellow group members).
  • Student
    • Can access and interact with course content including submitting assignments and quizzes.
    • Can create, read, and reply to discussion board posts.
    • Can view own grades only.
    • Can message anyone else in the course individually but cannot send message to entire course.
    • Please note: Students that are officially registered for a course will automatically be added to the Canvas course in the role of Student and should not be manually added to courses for which they are not registered.  As per University policy, only officially registered students are permitted to attend courses. Students who are not officially registered within the appropriate time period WILL NOT receive a grade or earn credit for the course even if they attend the entire course and complete all required work.
  • SI Leader/Tutor/Coach
    • Can create announcements.
    • Can add, edit, and delete content and course files.
    • Can moderate discussions.
    • Can send messages to individuals and entire class.
    • Can create, edit, or delete groups.
  • Designer
    • Can add, edit, or delete assignments or quizzes.
    • Can add, edit, or delete rubrics.
    • Can publish or conclude a course. 
    • Can view course statistics/activity.
    • Can add/remove users in course except those with Designer, TA, or Teacher roles.
  • TA
    • Cannot publish or conclude a course
    • Can view student submissions, analytics, and grades.
    • Can grade student work but cannot select final grade for moderated assignments.
  • Teacher
    • Highest level of permissions in a course.
    • Can add or remove any user role in course.
    • Can select final grade for moderated assignments.
    • Use the Student View to interact with course as a student.
