Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus Lockdown Browser is used to give tests alongside Blackboard Learn and Canvas. This browser is a separate program that students will need to download and install from:  (or by clicking the Download Software tile on

  • This program will lockdown the computer so the user is unable to access any programs or other features.  

  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized.  

  • Prevents access to other applications including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines and network monitoring applications.  

  • Print, print screen and screen capture functions are disabled.  

  • Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented.  

  • Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts and task switching are disabled.  

  • An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading.  

  • Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop.  

  • Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers.  

  • Localized for multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese.  

  • Supports screen readers and accessibility programs.  

  • Available for Windows, Mac and iOS.  

Using the LockDown Browser in Your Blackboard Learn Course

If a test has been created within Blackboard that requires that the students use the LockDown Browser to complete it, follow the instructions below.

Step 1. From the left-hand navigation menu in the course, click on Course Tools, then scroll down to click on Respondus LockDown Browser.

Step 2. On the next page, all deployed tests in the course will be listed.  

Step 3. Click on the menu to Modify Settings for a particular test.

Step 4. Select the radio button to Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this test.  It is recommended to NOT require an additional password.

Note: Disregard Respondus Monitor (Webcam) settings as Kent State does not currently utilize this feature.

Step 5. Click Save and Close.

Note: The name of the test has been changed and LockDown Browser is now marked “Required”.

Under Respondus LockDown Broser Dashboard section, Assessments > "test"- requires Respondus LockDown Browser is highlighted. Also under the LockDown browser column, "required" is highlighted

Following these steps to require the LockDown browser will automatically change certain settings on the test.  These changed settings are necessary for the LockDown Browser to function properly.  Do NOT modify these settings in Test Options as it will cause errors.  

  • The name of the exam will include the text “Requires Respondus LockDown Browser”.  

  • The test will open in a new window.  

  • A password will be automatically generated and appear in the password box.  

Do NOT change or remove any of these settings in Test Options.
