Wireless Card Recommendations on the Kent campus

Due to the high volume of network traffic on campus, your wireless experience on campus may be different from the way it is at home.  To enhance your wireless experience on campus, it is recommended that your computer be equipped with a dual band wireless card.   While most Mac products are equipped with dual band capabilities, it is an upgrade option for a PC.

Does my computer need to have dual band capability?

Any 802.11 type of wireless adapter will allow you to successfully connect to the wireless network.  Computers that have dual band capability will have a better quality connection to wireless access points (AP) with better bandwidth and less interference.

I am going to purchase a new computer.  How can I tell if it has dual band capability?

Most standard PC’s are not equipped with dual band cards.  If you are given the option when ordering, select the dual-band adaptor (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac).  If you are not given the option, consider choosing a computer that has a dual-band wireless adapter by default (typically a higher performance computer). An external dual band wireless adapter (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac) can also be used if the internal wireless adapter card does not meet these specifications.

I have already purchased a computer.  How can I tell if it has dual band capability?

  1. Control panel
  2. Device manager
  3. Hardware
  4. Network Adapters
  5. See table above

OR

  1. Hover over the wireless icon in the tray
  2. Right click on Open Network connections
  3. Click on Wireless and then Properties

If you cannot determine whether your wireless card is dual band, perform a web search on the name of the wireless card to see if it meets the dual band specifications.

My computer does not have dual band capability.  What are my options?

As stated previously, any wireless adaptor will allow you to successfully connect to the wireless network.  If you wish to improve the quality of your connection, dual band adapters can be purchased on campus at the Tech Help Service and Repair Center, on line or through stores that carry electronics.  If you plan to purchase a wireless adapter, be sure that it is a WiFi certified USB adapter that meets the specifications in the box above (802.11 a/b/g/n).
