Why can't I use my ISP's SMTP server while connected to the VPN?

When connected to the KSU VPN, all of your Internet connections go through the university's network.  While there are few limitations on VPN user network connections, you will notice that port 25 (SMTP) is blocked.

This is to prevent malware-infected users from inadvertently using the Kent State network to send spam.

If you use the KSU VPN and need to send e-mail, you have two options:

1) Access your email through FlashLine clicking the email icon in the top right.

2) Configure your e-mail client to use your ISP's SSL-encrypted SMTP server, which is typically on port 465 or 587 and therefore not blocked by the university.
