Upgrade from Legacy Auth to Modern Auth on a macOS device using the Mail App


Check your Version of macOS

Depending on your version of macOS, you may need to upgrade to avoid a service distruption. 

  • macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and newer: The Mail and Calendar apps that come with macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and macOS 10.15 (Catalina) will continue to work. Depending on how you originally set up your Mac, you may need to delete and re-add your email/calendar account profile to avoid a service disruption.

  • macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and older: The built-in Mail and Calendar apps that came with macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or older will not work. To continue using those apps, you will need to upgrade your macOS, or you can switch to using Outlook for Mac or access you email in a web browser at https://mail.kent.edu

Delete and Re-add your Exchange/Office 365 Account from your Mac Device Settings.

Delete an email account

  1. Pull down the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.

  2. Choose Internet Accounts.


  1. Select the email account you want to delete from the Mac from the list.


  1. With the email account selected, click the [-] minus button (or hit the Delete key on the keyboard)
  1. Confirm that you want to remove the email account AND all of it’s associated emails and account settings from the Mac, including from the Mail application


  1. The account will disappear from the list and all associated emails and settings from the email address will also vanish. You can repeat with other email accounts as necessary


Setup an email account

  1. Open the Mail App


  1. Select Exchange as the Mail Account Provider then click Continue.
    • Note: If you have other accounts already setup, click the Mail menu then click Add Account.


  1. Name: Enter a name for the account. (ex. Kent Email Account)

Email Address: Enter your full Kent email address (ex. email@kent.edu)

Click Sign In.


  1. When prompted to sign in to your Exchange account using Microsoft, click Sign In.


  1. Enter your FlashLine password. Click Sign In


  1. Approve permissions requested by clicking Accept.


  1. Select the apps you want to use with this account. Click Done.
