Respondus LockDown Browser (Student)

The Respondus LockDown Browser is used to give tests alongside the Blackboard Platform. This is a separate program that will need to be downloaded and installed from: https://software.kent.edu  (or by clicking the Download Software tile on support.kent.edu)

  • This program will lockdown the computer so the user is unable to access any programs or other features.

  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized.

  • Prevents access to other applications including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines and network monitoring applications.

  • Print, print screen and screen capture functions are disabled.

  • Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented.

  • Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts and task switching are disabled.

  • An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading.

  • Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop.

  • Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers.

  • Localized for multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese.

  • Supports screen readers and accessibility programs.

  • Available for Windows, Mac and iOS. Not compatible with Chromebooks. Please see this article for more information on Chromebooks and Blackboard Learn.

To Take a Test:

  1. If not already available, download the Respondus LockDown Browser from https://software.kent.edu

  2. Close all programs unless one is used to connect to the internet.

  3. Locate the “LockDown Browser” shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. (For Mac users, launch “LockDown Browser” from the Applications folder.)

  4. If prompted, either close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging) by choosing Yes. Or, close LockDown Browser and close the blocked program before restarting.

  5. Login to the appropriate Blackboard course.

  6. Navigate to the test and select it.

  7. If the instructor requires a test password, a new window will appear asking for the Exam Password. Enter the password and click Begin Exam.

  8. The test will then start. (Note, once a test has been started with Respondus LockDown Browser, it cannot be exited until the Submit button is clicked.)
